Who owns Stihl?

Stihl was founded in 1926 by Andreas Stihl, often dubbed as the ‘Father of the chainsaw’. The German company is one of the world’s leading chainsaw manufacturers and is now owned by the descendants of Andreas Stihl.

The rapid expansion of Stihl enabled the company to build manufacturing facilities across the globe in countries such as the United States and China. Stihl also operates the Stihl Timbersports Series, a set of wood-chopping competitions founded in 1985 involving saws and axes.

Where are Stihl products made?

Stihl was founded in the Stuttgart borough of Bad Cannstatt; however, the main headquarters were moved to Waiblingen in 1945 after a bombing during The Second World War damaged the factory. There are eight Stihl facilities in Germany, as well as facilities globally across four continents.

Germany

Employing approximately 5,262 staff across eight facilities, Germany is the home of the company’s roots and is responsible for manufacturing various components and products. Opening in 1971, Stihl currently possesses one of Europe’s largest magnesium die-casting facilities, producing around 32 million components yearly.

The company’s Plant 2 in Waiblingen-Neustadt produces various plastic components and guide bars with state-of-the-art equipment. Stihl’s smallest production facility, based in Wiechs am Randen, manufactures aluminium handlebars, electric saws and disc guards. Waiblingen is also home to Stihl’s training centre, where employees learn the fundamental skills required to produce high-quality products.

Asia

Opening in 2006, Stihl’s Asia manufacturing facility in Qingdao, China, is the second largest plant in the company. Boasting an impressive 65,000 square metres of space and employing approximately 1,500 staff, Stihl’s Qingdao manufacturing facility has produced around 15 million product units since opening.

The Qingdao facility produces the Stihl HS 52 hedge trimmer, targeted towards the Asian market for harvesting tea. Additionally, Stihl’s subsidiary ZAMA, who manufacture engine components such as carburettors, has manufacturing facilities across Asia in Japan, China, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

United States

Stihl’s US production facility, founded in 1974 and based in Virginia Beach, employs over 2,000 staff and is the largest facility within Stihl’s operations. The facility only produced one chainsaw type when it first opened; however, it currently manufactures more than 250 models of chainsaw bars and plastic parts. Stihl’s US plant uses approximately 16 million kilograms of granulate in plastic production, and the assembly line can build and inspect a fuel tank in just over 30 seconds.

Austria

Stihl’s subsidiary, Stihl Tirol, is based in Langkampfen and specialises in assembling ground-supported outdoor equipment such as lawnmowers. Employing over 700 staff, Stihl Tirol produces over 170 models of outdoor machinery they test on their 3,000 square metre test area on the facility’s roof. Although Stihl Tirol focuses on outdoor ground machinery, they manufacture various handheld battery-powered products.

Switzerland

Stihl chainsaws’ high quality and performance are down to the exceptional production of saw chains at the company’s Swiss facility in Wil. Opening in 1974, just under 1,000 employees work at Stihl’s Swiss facility and manufacture around 70 saw chain variations. To ensure the saw chains have maximum durability, every rivet is hardened by induction heating to generate the highest quality chains.

Brazil

Stihl’s Brazilian subsidiary, Ferramentas Motorizadas, was established in 1973 and was the first international facility in the Stihl group. Based in São Leopoldo, Stihl Ferramentas Motorizadas is one of Brazil’s finest employers, winning several awards for its exceptional work environment. Extensive investment has been put towards research and development in Stihl’s Brazilian facility, with approximately 90% of all cylinders used in Stihl products being manufactured there.

Is Stihl a good brand?

Stihl is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of outdoor power tools, known for producing high-quality products that are a great option for homeowners and professional arborists. Stihl guarantees exceptional performance and durability in all of its products, such as chainsaws, lawnmowers and hedge trimmers.

The durability of Stihl products ensures a lengthy lifespan, making them a fantastic long-term investment for anyone needing outdoor tools. Since its inception, the company has continued manufacturing innovative products that ensure superb quality and performance to help everyone easily complete gardening tasks.

Do I have to register my Stihl product?

Warranty is vital for any purchase, ensuring your products will be repaired or replaced within a certain time frame stated by the manufacturer. Stihl-approved dealers will register your product, signalling the start date of your warranty period. Additionally, any tools bought from Stihl’s online store will be registered for warranty on your behalf.

Any Stihl machinery designed for domestic use has a warranty period of two years from the purchase date. In contrast, any Stihl equipment designed for professional use has a one-year warranty period from the date of purchase. Stihl high-pressure cleaners are granted a one-year warranty extension, while any spare parts are covered by a warranty period of one year.

How to store Stihl equipment

A dry and dust-free space is the best option for storing your Stihl equipment to ensure that dust and water don’t damage it. For those with children, ensure that you store your equipment out of their reach and lock cupboards or storage rooms to prevent them from accessing the equipment.

If you are storing your equipment for a month or longer, clean it before storing it. Cleaning away any dirt and debris will prevent your equipment from wearing down and ensure it stays in top condition for the next use. For any petrol-based tools, emptying the fuel tank before storing is important, as petrol left in the tank may impact the tool’s performance when you start it again.
